How to Discover and Unleash your Passion

It can't be denied. There is a pure satisfaction from ending the day knowing you've spent time expressing your creative passion. When you're completely engaged in it, there's a feeling of complete 'rightness'. It feels like your very being is fulfilling its purpose.

So what's yours? Maybe you have already found it - likely you actually have more than one. Or maybe you're still discovering what it could be. Maybe you know but keep hitting blockages to actually expressing it.

Passion for writing

I recently rediscovered my passion for writing stories. It's something that draws me in completely, until hours have gone by without even keeping track of time. It makes me feel alive because I get to infuse life into my stories. I usually write with a basic premise in mind, but I have no idea where it's going until I type the words. I can create magic, I can bring people through the deepest of processes and transformation.

So, here are some helpful questions for discovering your passion(s):

  • What did you naturally feel drawn to as a child?

  • What are your current strengths? e.g. networking, problem solving, imagination, empathy, leadership

  • Is there anything you do for which time simply disappears when you're doing it?

  • What makes you feel alive?

What have you come up with? Now, think about how you can combine these activities and traits into a creative pursuit.

How to fully unleash your passion in your life

Family gardening together

First of all, the fundamentals; creative passion needs to be given time and space. If your day is already full of to-dos and your mind is full of worries and plans then no amount of good intention is going to help. A creative passion cannot be forced. It needs space to bubble up naturally within you until it just has to be expressed. I appreciate many of you may have busy lives, particularly those taking care of others. So, in this case it's important to get innovative with how you give yourself space. For example, parents can incorporate their own passions into an engaging activity with their children.

Secondly, let's get a little deeper. Most, if not all, of us will have internal psychological and spiritual blockages which can get in the way. Perhaps you don't give yourself enough worth to gift yourself free time for passion. Perhaps it's difficult to imagine doing something that's not 'productive'. Or there might be self-judgement which comes through as being embarrassed about doing it in front of others. So, identifying and working with your shadow when it comes to your creative expression is essential.

Thirdly, you need to feed your passion. This means making it feel good to keep doing it. Dopamine plays an important role here. This is the neurotransmitter that activates when you're given the feeling of completing a task. So, it's good to make sure there aren't any 'cheap' dopamine hits like social media and comfort eating before you give time to your passion. The activity itself should be the dopamine hit.

Inviting others to share in your passion is also a great feedback loop and motivator to keep going.

Conclusion

Why not start today? It needn't feel like a chore. It's for you and nobody else. Not because you're being selfish or even because you're giving value to the world. Rather, simply because it feels like a natural and fulfilling expression of your soul.

Good article Rich. This is true - dopamine activates when you are given a tast to complete something. What in exploring at the moment is when I percieve an outcome with tjr creative project then there's an extra impulse to pursue and persist with it. But it can be come controlling. So a need to be aware of that. But when I don't percieve any outcome at all, there's less motivation to pursue it. The mind questions what is the point of pursuing it at all. But I heard something yesterday which opened something for me - do it because it feeds your soul! Often the mind can't see where it might lead. Vimal 🙏
