In order to make radical progress on the spiritual path, one has to be prepared to let go of inner identities and outer circumstances which no longer serve. Only that way can your divine self emerge.
In essence, you perfect the art of dying and being reborn
This is essential to keep up with the flow of soul as it creates circumstances to liberate you from small ego/separation consciousness.
This may happen on a small scale in the minutiae of daily life - like letting go of the need to have your child in bed by a certain time, or changing a morning routine.

Or it may happen on a larger scale when your whole world feels like it's falling apart and will never be the same again. This is often termed the "dark night of the soul".

This all prepares us for the final passing on from this world, which can be attained through 'mahasamadhi' - consciously leaving the physical body.
